A collaboration of researchers from the University of Melbourne and the University of Bayreuth, under the lead of Prof. Andrea O’Connor from the University of Melbourne has been awarded the Study Melbourne Research Partnership program grant. Prof. Dr. Thomas Scheibel, Chair of Biomaterials at the University of Bayreuth, is the project leader from Bayreuth.
This project involves the development of multidimensional biomaterials for tissue repair. Multidimensional biomaterials are multi-layered synthetic materials that are used in medicine for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes and come into direct contact with biological tissue of the body. As one of 15 projects in the Australian state of Victoria, the German-Australian project has now been selected for funding and will receive support of 200,000 Australian dollars, paid out over twelve months. The cooperation project is the only one in the funding round with German participation.
The funding from the Victorian Government will allow intensiftiying the joint research on cutting-edge biomaterials concepts in biomaterial sciences, in particular in tissue engineering, which aims toward true healing of damaged tissue through the formation of artificial but fully functional tissue to recover the native healthy situation.
The project, which involves researchers from the University of Bayreuth under the leadership of Prof. Scheibel, builds on a long-standing research collaboration between the Universities of Bayreuth and Melbourne in the field of materials science. This has been funded by the DAAD since 2015 through the "Bayreuth-Melbourne Colloid/Polymer Network" with a total of around 1.1 million euros in research funding. The network led by Scheibel includes a total of 44 research groups. Participants include researchers from the University of Bayreuth, the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation). The project also supports PhD candidates and ECRs to set up their international network and gain international research experience.
