01 July 2022 Christian Wißler, Pressestelle, University of Bayreuth

From July 6 to 9, the international annual conference of the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" will take place for the third time. Registration for participation in person or online is still possible until July 5.

This year's event is dedicated to the topic of "Medialities" and offers an unusual format: face-to-face events will take place both at the University of Bayreuth and at the African Cluster Center of Rhodes University in Makhanda (South Africa). The events are to be streamed from one venue to the other, and can also be followed online. In this way, both personal interaction and intercontinental exchange between the participating scientists are guaranteed. The conference programme includes three keynote lectures, 15 scientific panels, two panel discussions, two film presentations, artistic performances, and a knowledge slam.

The Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" has been in existence since 2019 and has four locations on the African continent besides that of the University of Bayreuth. In addition to Rhodes University (South Africa), these African cluster centres are located at Moi University (Kenya), Joseph Ki-Zerbo University (Burkina Faso), and the University of Lagos (Nigeria). Through this innovative form of collaboration, the cluster seeks to fundamentally reconfigure African Studies, aligned with the three conceptual pillars of multiplicity, reflexivity, and relationality.

At the third annual conference, the Cluster will present research that focuses on the medial constitution of the respective subject matter. Past, present, and future lifestyles and worlds in Africa and the African diaspora will be examined from various disciplinary and artistic perspectives and analysed in their medial interactions. Thus, the conference will create spaces for the presentation of research results, theoretical debates, and intellectual exchange between members of all locations of the cluster.
