Engineering students at the University of Bayreuth benefit from a broadly-based research environment with excellent links to industry and small and medium-sized enterprises. They have access to current research projects of great economic-technological relevance at an early stage. At the beginning of their studies, they receive intensive support from researchers and lecturers. For this reason, the University of Bayreuth ranks among the top universities in Germany in the CHE University Ranking 2022 in the field of engineering subjects in the categories "support at the beginning of studies" and "third-party funding per scientist".

"In almost all areas of the economy and society today, we are experiencing rapid, sometimes disruptive changes driven by new insights and technology. Research cooperation between universities and companies can contribute significantly to this. That is why I am very pleased that our Faculty of Engineering is so high up in the CHE Ranking 2022 in terms of attracting third-party funding in the Germany-wide comparison. A high proportion of these research funds are raised through projects in which the University of Bayreuth collaborates with companies - often in its own region - to develop solutions to pressing technological challenges. The focus here is on linking innovation and sustainability. Accordingly, the content of our engineering degree programmes, for example in energy research, biotechnology, and material sciences, is shaped by forward-looking developments and trends," explains Prof. Dr. Martin Huber, Vice President of the University of Bayreuth for Teaching & Learning.

This year, the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) is covering a wide range of engineering subjects: biotechnology, electrical engineering and information technology, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, environmental engineering, and materials technology/material science. In all these fields, the University of Bayreuth has developed bachelor's and master's degree programmes, some of which are unique in Germany, such as "Automotive & Mechatronics (M.Sc.)". The engineering degree programmes are closely related to the interdisciplinary focus areas of the University of Bayreuth, in particular energy research & energy technology, new materials, ecology & environmental research, and molecular biosciences. The master's degree programmes in "Electrical Engineering & Information Systems Engineering", "Battery Technology", and "Battery Materials & Technology", which is also taught in English, will start in the 2022/23 winter semester. The University of Bayreuth was pleased to welcome its first students to the master's programme in "Environmental & Resource Technology" back in the 2021/22 winter semester.

The new ranking confirms the excellent support first-year students can rely on at the beginning of the studies at the University of Bayreuth. "Above all, it is important for us to provide students with trusted advice and guidance oriented towards individual interests and life situations. That is why we offer personal talks on planning studies right at the start of their studies, not least with regard to possible career prospects," Prof. Dr. Ruth Freitag, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering explains. "In addition to individual counselling, we organise cross-study workshops so that students can be sure of passing their studies and being well-prepared for their future careers. We are very well-networked with other service centres on the Bayreuth campus, such as the Equal Opportunities Department, the Career Service, the Diversity Service Centre, and the International Office. In this way, we can support our students in making decisive decisions that go far beyond subject-related content."
