The University of Bayreuth is a good place for start-ups: It has a large number of particularly good opportunities that foster a start-up dynamic and entrepreneurship culture. This is confirmed by the “HOCHSPRUNG Award”, presented today by the Entrepreneurship Network of Bavarian Higher Education Institutions, in which a special “Enabler” prize was awarded for the activities of Bayreuth’s Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

“In recent years, we have expanded our teaching and transfer offers across all faculties. The focus here is on teaching creativity techniques and innovation methods and developing new business models. These are taught in different formats such as the ‘Introduction to Entrepreneurship’, the ‘Bayreuth Hospitation’, or ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ not only theoretically, but also with regional cooperation partners,” explained Prof. Dr. Baum and Prof. Dr. Isidor, the Chairs of Entrepreneurship & Digital Business Models and Human Resource Management & Intrapreneurship.

In addition to the constant expansion of entrepreneurship training within the context of apprenticeships, a further focus is on the development of a lively start-up scene and a regional innovation ecosystem in Bayreuth. “Community events such as the Start-up Lounge, topic-specific lectures such as the Research Centre for Additive Innovations – Campus Additive Innovations and innovation workshops such as Start-up Day bring together students interested in setting up a business, company founders, and regional businesses. This exchange of ideas is important and serves as a breeding ground for further innovative projects,” said David Eder, a staff member in the Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

The special prize was presented online by Bernd Sibler (MdL), Bavaria’s State Minister for Science & Art. “We are very pleased about this award, as it honours our efforts over many years,” said Dr. Petra Beermann, head of the Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the University of Bayreuth. Of the 31 applications submitted throughout Bavaria, seven came from Bayreuth – this underlines the diversity of the various stakeholders in entrepreneurship training at the University of Bayreuth.

The following formats were submitted:

  • Community event format “Start-up Lounge” by the Office of E&I
  • Lecture “Bayreuther Hospitation” by the Chair of Information Systems Management
  • Course “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” by the Chair of Entrepreneurship & Digital Business Models in combination with virtual Start-up Day 2020
  • Course “Social Entrepreneurship” by the Chair of Human Resource Management & Intrapreneurship
  • Course “Entrepreneurial Thinking & Business Design” (teaching project Entrepreneurship4All)
  • Workshop for start-up teams “Minecraft Scrum” by the Chair of Applied Media Studies
  • Online lecture/webinar “Venture capital for additive innovations” by the Research Centre for Additive Innovations (CA.I)

The HOCHSPRUNG Award was presented for the first time in 2015 and aims to promote the start-up dynamics at Bavaria’s higher education institutions. The competition is geared towards institutions and individuals at Bavarian higher education institutions who motivate, qualify, or support students or researchers in the field of entrepreneurship. “Hochsprung” is the entrepreneurship network of Bavarian higher education institutions and is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science & Art. HOCHSPRUNG was founded in 2000 as part of the Bavarian High-Tech Offensive. The 5-Euro Business Competition also arose from HOCHSPRUNG.
