The public launch of ChatGPT has led to considerable dismay at schools and universities. However, a position paper authored by more than 20 scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) working in educational, social, computer and data sciences shows that the so-called language models also present many opportunities for education. In this interview, the coordinator Prof. Enkelejda Kasneci explains how the new technology could benefit learners and make teachers’ work easier.
Russian Twitter campaigns during the 2016 US presidential race primarily reached a small subset of users, most of whom were highly partisan Republicans, shows a new study. In addition, the international research team found that despite Russia’s influence operations on the platform, there were no measurable changes in attitudes or voting behavior among those exposed to this foreign influence campaign.
As of January, a new junior research group has started work at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi). The independent Emmy Noether Junior Research Group "GenDiT - Gender in the Age of Digitization and Technological Change", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), aims to analyze the links between digitization, technological change and gender inequalities in the education system and the labor market. The group is led by Dr. Malte Reichelt, who obtained the funding and moved from New York University Abu Dhabi to LIfBi at the beginning of the year.
Whether you need to go to work, the train station, the doctor's, the grocery store, or you want to visit family or go on a trip – outside of cities, such trips are often made by private vehicle. This is because there is usually not enough demand for large buses that would run a fixed route to maintain an economical operation. This gap is filled by so-called dial-a-bus services such as the "VGI-Flexi" service offered by the Ingolstadt transport association (VGI), which is being scientifically supported by logistics expert Prof. Dr. Pirmin Fontaine from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU).
Many companies carefully time disclosures on losses of sensitive customer data. A new study based on publicly traded US companies shows that companies tend to announce data leaks on days when other news dominates the headlines. This limits the impact on the share price, but also increases the risk to persons whose data are leaked.
What potential do robotic systems hold when it comes to relieving highly qualified nursing staff in hospitals of non-specialist service activities? This is currently being researched by the Professorship of Nursing Science at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) and the LMU university hospital in Munich. The cooperative project titled "REsPonSe - Robotersystem zur Entlastung des Pflegedienstes von Servicetätigkeiten” (robot system to relieve nursing staff of service activities) is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The use of a nursing robot is being tested in the nuclear medicine therapy ward of the Munich hospital.
Women are significantly underrepresented in German and French start-ups, especially in technical industries. This applies to both founders and employees, as a study from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in collaboration with the Roland Berger Foundation for European Management now shows. In companies founded by all-female teams, the proportion of women in the workforce is almost twice as high as in male-established ventures. Start-ups launched by men also have a much higher valuation.
Dr. Annamária Fábián-Trost, a linguist at the University of Bayreuth, is one of seven outstanding researchers who will receive funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences under the "Digital Transformation" programme starting in October 2022. Her project focuses on digital tools and communicative strategies that are used in social media to discriminate against people with disabilities or, on the contrary, can sustainably strengthen the inclusion of people with disabilities.
The University of Bayreuth and four African universities will continue their successful cooperation in the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" in the next three years. High-ranking representatives of the five partner universities signed an agreement to this effect today in Lagos. The University of Lagos (Nigeria), Moi University (Eldoret, Kenya), Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) and Rhodes University (Makhanda, South Africa) will thus continue to strengthen and advance joint projects in the fields of research and knowledge transfer with their "African Cluster Centers (ACCs)".
Production workers instructed with augmented reality glasses can work much faster than colleagues instructed with analog methods. However, an international study shows that they are less capable of internalizing their tasks and of making suggestions to improve production processes. These insights may help companies when adapting AR applications to their needs and balancing productivity gains against process optimization priorities.
