The Chair of Food Law at the University of Bayreuth has announced the winners of its scientific essay competition on the future of food law and food policy. Dr. Stephan Walch and Dr. Dirk Lachenmeier from the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) in Karlsruhe were awarded first prize for their analysis of the EU Novel Food Regulation. Anna Handte-Reinecker received second prize and Ankita Yadav third prize. Bayreuth master's students Anna Handte-Reinecker and Ankita Yadav received second and third prize, respectively. A publication of the award-winning essays is in preparation.
The CRISPR/Cas genome editing technique has sparked a revolution in medical procedures involving genetic modification. This poses a number of legal, ethical and biomedical challenges. To address these, a team of researchers headed by the legal scholar Professor Hans-Georg Dederer has launched a new, interdisciplinary BMBF cluster project at the University of Passau, which has been awarded a grant of 1.2 million euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The team includes researchers from Hannover Medical School as well as ethicists at the University of Bonn.
The University of Bayreuth and four African universities will continue their successful cooperation in the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" in the next three years. High-ranking representatives of the five partner universities signed an agreement to this effect today in Lagos. The University of Lagos (Nigeria), Moi University (Eldoret, Kenya), Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) and Rhodes University (Makhanda, South Africa) will thus continue to strengthen and advance joint projects in the fields of research and knowledge transfer with their "African Cluster Centers (ACCs)".
The University of Bayreuth is once again among the top 10 universities in Germany in the subjects of law and economics. In the WirtschaftsWoche University Ranking 2022, it is - as in the previous year - the only smaller university in Germany to achieve a place in the top group in these subjects. The ranking is based on the assessment of HR managers from SMEs and industry, and once again shows that doors on the job market are wide open for Bayreuth graduates.

Supported by the Adalbert Raps Foundation, researchers at the University of Bayreuth have developed a guide for innovative food producers. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Kai Purnhagen, the EU regulatory environment for products derived from mushrooms and mushroom mycelium was scrutinized. The team of the Food Law research group at the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health, together with the Centre for German & European Food Law at the University of Bayreuth, also identified gaps in EU law as part of this project.

Modern legal systems should protect human health and the environment, but at the same time also enable innovations to resolve important issues of the future. How successfully food law in the European Union fulfils these functions, and whether there is a need for reform, is being investigated in a new research project led by Prof. Dr. Kai Purnhagen, Chair of Food Law at the University of Bayreuth in Kulmbach. The project will be funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and Oberfrankenstiftung (Upper Franconia Foundation) to the amount of around € 800,000 over the next four years.
Alexandra Molitorisová and Elijah Granet, doctoral students at the University of Bayreuth’s Food Law research group in Kulmbach, and Lissy Verrall from the Inns of Court College of Advocacy in London, have won first prize in an international competition organised by Liquid Legal Institute e.V. (LLI) in Munich. Law students and doctoral candidates from all over the world were invited to develop an oath that - analogous to the Hippocratic Oath in medicine – contains tenets of ethical self-obligation for lawyers in professional practice. In the end, the winning proposal of the Anglo-German team managed to prevail over more than 20 others from five continents.
During its International Conference held from 14th to 17th July 2021, the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence has announced that keynote speaker Professor Dr. Fatou Sow will receive the BIGSAS honorary doctorate from the University of Bayreuth. The Senegalese sociologist is recognized for her unwavering commitment to the cause of women and her outstanding scholarly achievements in feminist topics on the African continent.
