Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has awarded Dr. Hanza Diman from Benin, alumnus of the University of Bayreuth, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on the occasion of German Unification Day 2022. During a ceremony themed "Building Bridges", the graduate of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) accepted the award today, 30 September 2022, at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. Together with him, 20 other persons were honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit for their public commitment.
On October 12, 2022, the Center of Energy Technology (ZET) at the University of Bayreuth will host the "Industry Day" for the first time. Representatives of companies from all branches of industry are invited to learn first-hand about the latest findings, innovative applications and cutting-edge technologies in fields of energy research and energy engineering. Together with ZET scientists, they can explore opportunities for cooperation in research and development. Participation is free of charge.
Markus Michel M.Sc., a graduate of the master's programme "Automotive and Mechatronics" at the University of Bayreuth, has been awarded the "VDI Prize for the best engineering thesis in 2022" by the Association of German Engineers (VDI). In his master's thesis, he developed a procedure for the measurement-based monitoring of highway bridges. In the future, this procedure could help to detect gradually developing damage at an early stage and to take countermeasures. The award will be presented on October 22, 2022, during this year's Graduate Day of the Faculty of Engineering on the campus of the University of Bayreuth.
Dr. Annamária Fábián-Trost, a linguist at the University of Bayreuth, is one of seven outstanding researchers who will receive funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences under the "Digital Transformation" programme starting in October 2022. Her project focuses on digital tools and communicative strategies that are used in social media to discriminate against people with disabilities or, on the contrary, can sustainably strengthen the inclusion of people with disabilities.
In the first nationwide university ranking for start-up founders, the University of Bayreuth landed in the top 10, showing once again how important Bayreuth has become as a location for start-ups. Only significantly larger universities land ahead of Bayreuth. The Bayreuth-based start-up InContAlert also scores excellently once again.
The European electricity market is one of the largest in the world in terms of its size and the volumes of electricity traded. It is divided into bidding zones in which consumers pay an identical price for electricity. This partition and the security of supply is regularly assessed by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), which is advised by a panel of international experts on adjustments required by energy policy. Recently, Dr. Martin Weibelzahl from the University of Bayreuth was appointed as a member.
The project "African Studies in Germany through the lens of Critical Race Theory" has prevailed in the new funding initiative "Aufbruch - Neue Forschungsräume für die Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften" of the Volkswagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung) : Dr. Serawit B. Debele, researcher at the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" at the University of Bayreuth, Stephanie Lämmert, Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, and Dr. Yusuf K. Serunkuma from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), are now jointly investigating African Studies in Germany from the perspective of Critical Race Theory.
Putting a price on CO₂ emissions and thus making emissions more expensive can make a significant contribution to reducing them. In a study published in the Economic Journal, Prof. Dr. Fabian Herweg, University of Bayreuth, and Prof. Dr. Klaus M. Schmidt, LMU Munich, compare two governmental instruments of carbon pricing with regard to their effectiveness: A carbon tax strengthens the willingness of households to voluntarily reduce CO₂ emissions. In contrast, a market for trading emission allowances that is based on a pre-determined emissions cap has a discouraging effect. It leads to higher emissions and shifts the burden of climate protection onto consumers with lower incomes.
Professor Othmar Moser (University of Bayreuth) has been awarded by the European Association for Diabetes Research (EASD) in cooperation with its foundation, the EFSD, for a research project that will assess opportunities for safe exercise in people with type 1 diabetes. The award is endowed with 100,000 euros.
Wax flowers and numerous plant genera related to them evolved about 33 million years ago. Shortly thereafter, they split into three independent evolutionary lineages, according to a new international study led by Bayreuth plant systematist Prof. Dr. Sigrid Liede-Schumann. A total of 37 genera and 740 species emerged, distributed over the tropics and subtropics worldwide. Only the combination of well-established morphological studies with the latest molecular genetic analysis methods ensures a correct taxonomic description and classification. The research results have been published in the journal "Taxon".
